USS DUBUQUE

Dear Mayor Duggan and Dubuque City Councilmembers,
Good afternoon. I'm LTJG Joe Goldsbeny of the USS DUBUQUE, LPD-8. This warship is an amphibious
transport. We get United States Marines to where they are needed - any time, any place. The ship also supports
a helicopter capable flight deck. Recently, we returned from a six and a half month deployment to the Persian
Gulf in support of Operation iraqi Freedom. Dudng this deployment we transported several hundred Marines to
and from the Middle East and conducted over 5,000 flight evolutions.
This ship was commissioned in 1967. As you are aware, USS DUBUQUE was named in honor of Julian
Dubuque who is, of course, a pioneer and your founding father. This ship hopes to build a relationship with the
city whose name she bares. We have several sailors onboard from Iowa. Personally, I was born in raised in the
Quad Cities.
Recently, I have contacted Kathy Sturm at the city's offices to inquire about getting a Dubuque flag. We hope to
fly it from our topmast dudng special occasions. In retum, the ship would be more than happy to send a flag flown
dudng Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Persian Gulf.
Also, on October 4, 2003, San Diego (our homeport) celebrates Fleet Week with a parade of ships. On behalf of
Captain J. B. Miller and the entire crew of the USS DUBUQUE, I would like to invite you all to take a cruise with
us that day through beautiful San Diego harbor. I realize that this is very short notice. You are welcome to visit
the ship any time, deployments not withstanding, of course.
