Proclamation Homelessness
WHEREAS, over 600 men, women and children are homeless within a year in
Dubuque; and
WHEREAS, homelessness and hunger is a devastating experience causing
disruption in families, loss of home and personal dignity and no person
in Dubuque should be stigmatized, discriminated against or isolated
because they are hungry or homeless; and
WHEREAS, over 75 local organizations, government agencies, churches and
religious organizations compassionately respond to the needs of those
experiencing hunger and homelessness with food, clothing, shelter,
services and permanent housing. The Homeless Advisory Board meets
regularly to collaborate and coordinate services; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque joins over 500 communities and college campuses across the
United States in observing “Hunger and Homelessness Awareness
Week.” In recognition of this week, several agencies that directly serve
the homeless are planning events to bring a greater awareness of
homelessness that is in our neighborhoods. Planned events include:
Saturday, November 15, 2003, Project Concern, Clarke & Loras
College Social Work Students will hold a blanket and outerwear drive
from 10 to 2 p.m. at Hy-Vee on Dodge; and
Wednesday November 19, 2003, from 11:30-12:30 the Dubuque
Rescue Mission will be holding a lunch and prayer meeting for clients
and caregivers; and
Friday, November 21, 2003, the Maria House is sponsoring
speakers Julia Dinsmore and Pam Jochum who will help us understand
the current state of welfare and homelessness.
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 17, 2003 AS:
“HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK”
