Eagle Point Bluffs
Good Afternoon, my name is Brenda Palmer, I am the Visual Display
Coordinator for Flexsteel Industries. I moved to Dubuque 7 years ago to
begin working for Flexsteel---I am origniaily fi:om the North side and
Northwest suburbs of Chicago. When I made the decision to leave Chicago
to come to Dubuque to work and live, ONE OF THE MAIN FACTORS WHICH
INFLUENCED MY DECISION WAS THE BEAUTY OF THE AREA, AND IN PARTICULAR THE
MISSISSIPPI RIVER. Each time I have guests or family, we always make the
Dam and Lock a priority visiting spot, along with Eagle Point Park. Many
are surprised, as was I at the beauty of this entire 3 state area.
Though I do not believe the eagles that migrate here will be in any
danger, I do believe two things: #1 It is a crime to spoil the beauty
and the history associated with the area under construction; there are,
no doubt other sites, perhaps with less grand vistas, that would be more
appropriate for this condominium project. #2 The vacation home, 2nd
home candidates that you hope to attract will not be prepared, nor will
they live comfortably with the noise generated daily by the trains and
the Lock and Dam facility. The first is not in Dubuque's best interest,
and the 2nd may, in the end, lead to the property becoming less
desirable and lower income property. I have long wondered why those of
you who are Dubuque natives have never properly developed the river's
edge more fully for public enjoyment, and yet now you will sacrifice
some of the best preserved property to private ownership. Being a
visually-oriented person makes this project even more distasteful to me.
In the long mn, I may return to Chicago, but you wilt not ever get over
the damage done by this project if taken to completion. Please take the
time and make the effort to reconsider your stance on this very
important project---it's not yet too late. Thank you for your attention
in this matter.
Brenda Palmer, Visual Display Coordinator, Flexsteel Industries
P.S. My good friend, Venice Richardson, is the person who alterted me to
the situation, and would, I'm sure, voice these same concerns!
