Proclamation Mercy Year in Dbq
WHEREAS, the Sisters of Mercy provided Dubuque with the first hospital in 1879;
and
WHEREAS, the Sisters of Mercy, along with the Sisters of St. Francis and
through their employees, continually respond to the healthcare
needs of this community; and

WHEREAS, the Sisters of Mercy will observe their 125 anniversary of health
service to Dubuque and the Tri-States through a year long series of
events begun on January 18, 2004, with a city-wide mass to be held
at the Cathedral of St. Raphael, officiated by the most Reverend
Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB.
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF
DUBUQUE, IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THAT THE YEAR OF 2004 BE
OBSERVED AS:
“MERCY YEAR IN DUBUQUE”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND ACTIVELY ENCOURAGE THE SUPPORT
AND PARTICIPATION OF FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, COLLEAGUES, AND FELLOW
CITIZENS IN ASSOCIATED MERCY ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT
THE YEAR.
