Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
December 15, 2010
Present: Vice President; Paula Connors, Elizabeth Leeper, Fred Miller, Kristen
Smith, and Mike Willis
Excused: President; Diann Guns and David Hammer
The Library Board of Trustees met early in December due to the Christmas
holiday and the following is a summary of the meeting:
• 42% of the fiscal year has lapsed and 41% of the budget has been
expended. Revenue generated is at 27.8% of projections.
• The number of check outs increased in November by 13 percent
compared to November, 2009. This is significant because in November
2009 circulation was up even while under construction. Visitors are asking
more questions as they become acquainted with new spaces as
represented by a 127% increase in directional questions over the same
time last year.
• Library card holders are up to 44,791.
• Although census 2010 data will not be available until next year, other
community demographics have been updated (copy attached).
• The Art Subcommittee has three new members: Ali Lavasseur, Jordan
DeGree from the Dubuque Arts Center, and Mark Wahlert the new
Director of the Dubuque Museum of Art. The next subcommittee meeting
is January 17 at which time we will determine which products to
purchase for a hanging system for our permanent collection, as well as
easels and cubes for exhibits. We will also be discussing our early spring
exhibit that complements the Smithsonian exhibit which will be hosted by
the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. The exhibit is
called "Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters of America."
• Bruce Hamous from OPN visited and several outstanding issues were
discussed including the shortage of shelving on first floor. We believe we
have an option available that will house all of the Fiction and AN collection
through a new floor arrangement and the purchase of additional shelving
units.
• Meetings will begin in January to kick off LEED assignments as the Library
is in its "monitoring" phase.
• Jim Kolf, the principal overseeing our construction project has been
released from Durrant. We will work with Rick Golus to complete the
project.
• A new meeting room policy was adopted which streamlined the former
policy and includes the updated names of the meeting rooms.
• A new patron behavior policy was approved which streamlined the former
policy. Separate guidelines will be provided for staff that supports the
policy.
• The Director's evaluation was received and filed.
• Library Assistant Rachel Gerber is retiring at the end of December after 18
years of service. Hiring will be postponed until we know the status of the
budget request to change this position to that of Library Aide. Circulation
Supervisor, Debi Stephenson has 20 direct reports and it is hoped that a
Library Aide can be hired to perform duties of an Assistant Circulation
Supervisor.
