Van Milligen, City Manager Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Application The Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau recently notified us of the availability of additional traffic safety funds for a pedod of six months from April 1 to September 30, 2004. Dubuque County has been identified as one of 41 Iowa counties with a notable incidence of impaired driving related crashes. Chief of Police Klm Wadding recommends City Council approval of an Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Application for additional traffic safety funds for the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers. I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council approval. Michael C. Wadding~',~ Police Chief Re: Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Application INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this memorandum is to seek approval of an Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Application for additional traffic safety funds for the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers. BACKGROUND: The Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau has notified us of the availability of additional traffic safety funds for a period of six months from April I to September 30, 2004. Dubuque County has been identified as one of 41 Iowa counties with a notable incidence of impaired driving related crashes. The purpose of the funding is to initiate projects that focus attention to the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers. DISCUSSION: The traffic safety funds would provide funds for selective enforcement projects by providing funds for overtime, the purchase of preliminary breath test indicators, and/or an in-car video camera. This is a reimbursement program and would be used in connection with our other traffic safety initiatives. The application is due to the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau by February 2, 2004.
