SUBJECT: Official Naming of Port of Dubuque Riverfront Marina
DATE: January 10, 2011
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to recommend the official naming of Port of
Dubuque Riverfront Marina.
BACKGROUND
The Engineering Department is in the process of preparing construction documents for
the development of a Port of Dubuque Riverfront Marina in the Ice harbor.
Quimby's is a national publication that boaters use extensively to find facilities along the
river to meet their needs. The deadline for advertising to be placed in the Quimby's
guide is fast approaching. To place an ad the transient marina facility needed an official
name.
The Riverfront Marina Steering Committee was asked their thoughts on a name. The
committee consists of Laura Carstens, Jenny Larson, Cindy Steinhauser, Ken TeKippe,
Don Vogt, Bob Schiesl and I. In addition Randy Gehl and Kelley Schiesl were involved
in the discussion.
DISCUSSION
It was determined the name would need to be created that would work well for
marketing, advertising, a logo, website and other forms of advertising as necessary.
Names considered used the words Port, Marina, Dubuque, Mississippi, and River in a
variety of arrangements.
RECOMMENDATION
The committee agreed on the shortest yet highly marketable name "Port of Dubuque
Marina." We recommend Port of Dubuque Marina as the official name.
