Narrative Description: This is a three-story industrial plant. The factory has a raised stone foundation and an L-plan. Ground floor windows are elongated while those on the upper levels are shorter. The brick parapet front has a simple corbelling treatment on the Elm Streetfront only. The entrances have been remodeled with concrete columns that stretch up to the second floor level. The corners of the buildings have also been ornamented with painted, concrete or stone vertical panels. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: This factory is documented more out of historical interest than a certainty that the building is individually National Register of Historic Places eligible. The building retains a very high state of integrity but the replacement entrances and corner decorative treatments might combine to render it ineligible. Further research is recommended and the building is certainly minimally of historical and architectural interest. Metz Manufacturing Company, view southeast from 1 (Telegraph-Herald, no date, c.1958) The new millwork firm of Roehl, Hagge & Metz was founded in October 1898 and the partners were Louis F. Metz and John Hagge. The company produced millwork. The first plant was at .18th and Elm in a two-story frame 30x48 foot building and operations commenced on October 15, 1898. The firm incorporated in 1901 and sometime after 1903 built this building on the abandoned stone foundations begun by a buggy factory. The company already owned the land as of September 1903 Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs State Historical Society of Iowa Iowa Site Inventory Form Continuation Sheet Site Number 31-04932 Related District Number Paqe 2 Haoqe & Metz Manufacturino Company Name of Property East 1 ih and Elm streets Address Dubuque County Dubuoue City when the block was sewered.
