The City of Dubuque fully supports the Save America's Treasures (SAT) grant program.
SAT has a ten -year proven track record of success nationally in job creation and
economic revitalization through historic preservation.
SAT has been used successfully in Dubuque to preserve four of our treasured
structures, to create jobs, to strengthen partnerships, and to enhance educational
opportunities. The Shot Tower, Wm. M. Black steamboat, Old Jail, and Grand Opera
House each received SAT grants, which enabled the community to leverage other state,
local, and private funds to rehabilitate and restore these important historic icons. These
structures tell the story not only of Dubuque, but of Iowa and the nation. The Wm. M.
Black steamboat and the Oki Jail are National Historic Landmarks; the Shot Tower is in
the nomination process for this highest level of historic recognition.
It is vitally important that we ensure that Save America's Treasures is included as a
priority in the 2012 budget at the $25 million level. We hope we can count on your
support. Please contact me for more information. Thank you.
