Proclamation Make a Wish Week

PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa grants wishes of children with life-
threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength
and joy; and
WHEREAS,
in 1986 the Make-A-Wish began in Iowa by a group of volunteers who
wanted to do something special for Zachery, a special child who lived in
eastern Iowa. Make-A-Wish flew him and his family to Sioux City, Iowa for
a Thanksgiving dinner with extended family and to watch and meet the
magician, David Copperfield, and
WHEREAS, there are 77 chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the United States
as well as 27 international affiliates. Since 1980 more ,than 97,000 wishes
have been fulfilled worldwide, and
WHEREAS, the Iowa Chapter has fulfilled over 1.200 wishes and anticipates granting
136 wishes during the fiscal year. Wishes have included trips to Disney
World, New York and Daytona 500, as well as computers, stereos and
opportunities to meet celebrities with the average cost over $67,000, and
whereas,
children who are between the ages of 2'1. and 18 who suffer from life-
threatening medical conditions are eligible and they can be referred to the
Make-A-Wish Foundation by anyone, and
WHEREAS, approximately 85 cents of every dollar was used for wish-related expenses.
Make-A-Wish is a volunteer driven organization with a 17 member Board
and over 400 active volunteers.
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF APRIL 18 THROUGH 24,2004 As-.
