Re:
HF 2574 Department of Revenue Technical Corrections
Dear Senator
I am writing to encourage you to vote no for a House amendment to HF 2574, a
Department of Revenue Technical Correction bill. This bill would require an assessor to
pay appeal costs when an assessment is found to be off by 10% or more, This would
create an undue burden in the assessment process and result in increase costs to cities
and counties. This amendment would also erode the tax base for cities and counties
who have low-income properties supported by Section 42 funding by providing an
alternative valuation process.
You will recall that in 2003 the legislature established the Property Tax Implementation
Committee to look at a comprehensive and equitable approach to reform of the property
tax system. This process allows any property tax changes to be reviewed for impact on
local governments and taxpayers. To approve this amendment to HF 2574 would
circumvents this process, I encourage you to oppose the House amendment regarding
assessors,
Sincerely,
Michael C. Van Milligen
