Dear Honorable Dubuque City Council Members:
I would like to express my interest to serve the people of Dubuque by applying for the vacancy
in the 4 Ward on the Dubuque City Council. The passing of Dirk Voetberg is sad and
unfortunate for this city. I know I cannot replace such a person, but I hope to follow in his
dedication to Dubuque by serving the people of the 4th Ward. I was recently appointed to the
Sister City Relationships Advisory Commission in the City of Dubuque, and I am passionate
about public service.
I came to Dubuque in 2007 to begin my studies at Loras College. I will graduate this May with a
degree in Politics and International Studies. It has been an opportunistic and fortunate
experience to attend college in Dubuque. I have had several opportunities to sharpen my
leadership and communication skills, which I believe would make me an asset to the Dubuque
City Council.
During summer and winter breaks at Loras College, I have served as the Government
Relations/Regulatory Affairs intern at VGM & Associates, a member service organization for the
durable medical equipment industry located in Waterloo, Iowa. Through this opportunity I truly
became a student of proposed legislation and regulations. The work that I did at VGM mostly
dealt with reading and interpreting proposed legislation and regulations, and writing opinion
letters for the company based on our stance on these proposals. I also kept regular contact with
state and federal legislators about issues that faced the durable medical equipment industry.
During the last academic year, I served as the Loras College Student Union President. Through
this experience I learned a lot about my leadership and communication abilities. I helped
distribute the Student Union's budget by making deals with other organizations, helped to keep
the library hours open when the college faced budget problems, and helped communicate the
issues and concerns of students to the Administration. With the help of a few college leaders
from around the state of Iowa, I created the Iowa Student Congress. The goal of the Iowa
Student Congress is to bring the student leaders from across Iowa together to voice any concerns
we have about issues ranging from the tuition hikes at the public colleges to the Iowa Tuition
Grant cuts this past year that affected the private colleges.
This past summer, I served as a District Intern for Congressman Bruce Braley in Waterloo, Iowa.
During t s experience, ie e• corresponden rom cons i uen s an '
replied to in a sufficient and timely manner. Through this experience, along with my term as
Loras Student Union President, I learned how to communicate effectively with constituents. It is
important that everyone has the opportunity to voice their concerns, and elected leaders must
make themselves accessible at all times.
Since August, I have served as the Government Affairs intern at the Dubuque Area Chamber of
Commerce. One of my tasks when I arrived at the Chamber was to help finalize the Chamber's
Legislative Agenda. Through this project, I became well- versed on the issues that the city faces,
and the goals that the city would like to reach in the immediate future. I have also been able to
network with many of Dubuque's business leaders, introducing me to a population that I was
once not familiar with. These connections will be vital if I am appointed to the Dubuque City
Council.
My experiences do not pertain solely to internships and leadership positions. I have also
volunteered my time within the community. I have had several opportunities to serve the
Dubuque community through Campus Ministry at Loras College. I have served meals at First
Congregational Church, helped out with fundraisers for the Riverview Center, and I have
delivered meals to the elderly community for Luther Manor. I believe that it is important to
serve our community not only as a public servant, but as a volunteer as well.
I believe that we are all students, all the time. Every new opportunity or experience is another
lesson learned. I would like to serve the City of Dubuque on the City Council because I hope to
serve the residents of the 4 Ward, and learn more about this community and city government as
well. I believe that I possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the duties of this
position, but I am also looking forward to learning everything that is necessary for serving on the
Dubuque City Council. The City of Dubuque has made so much progress in recent years; I
would like to help continue that progress. It would be an absolute honor to serve with this
distinguished and accomplished group of leaders, and I guarantee that I would put my best effort
each and every single day to serve the people of the 4 Ward of Dubuque. Thank you for your
consideration.
Sincerely,
1-11LIX
