RE: Grandview Avenue Parkway Demolition District
Dear Mayor and City Council Members:
As Historic Preservation Commission Chairman, I offer the following explanation as to why I
requested that the proposed Grandview Avenue Parkway Demolition District be pulled from
the City Council's May 17, 2004 agenda, since I did not have the opportunity to speak at the
May 17 meeting.
I made this request because I understood that a second petition in opposition had been
submitted to the Council with a majority of neighborhood opposition, in contrast to the first
and only petition the HPC had received at its public meeting with a majority of neighborhood
support. .
Since the HPC's recommendation for approval was based in part on the first petition in
support, I felt the item should be pulled to allow the HPC time to review the second petition
in opposition. Potentially, the HPC's recommendation may have changed from approval to
denial if we had been given the opportunity to review the second petition and perform any
necessary research as a result of that review.
The Planning Services staff learned of the second petition on May 13, and then contacted
me. My request to pull this item was made that same afternoon -- the earliest possible time
a request to pull the item could be filed under the circumstances.
Bya consensus of the HPC, I request that the City Council receive and file this letter as part
of the Council record for the proposed Grandview Avenue Parkway Demolition District.
