Re:
Librar¡ Back-Up Emergency Lights (re: CIP 010792)
Date: May 13, 2004
Background
During a recent power outage we learned the back-up emergency lighting system in the
library no longer worked. The system is outdated andrequired parts that are no longer
available; they have become obsolete. I discussed this with Assistant Fire Marshall Jeff
Zasada. He explained we couldn't put off this type of project. By code the Library must
have a back-up emergency lighting system installed. We further discussed options
available for different systems.
Discussion
To replace the present system with a similar one would cost around $19,000.
The system could be replaced with individual batteries per unit at a cost of$9,100.
The system I believe will work best for the library will be a single unit which will replace
our t,\ree exiSlingunits a.11d complenients online technology. Although it is $12;995
(approximately $3,895 more than the lowest priced system) it will not require the
maintenance of the individual batteries every three years that the up-front lower cost
system needs.
Recommendation
The Library lacks the money for this emergency replacement of equipment. During this
current fiscal year the Library's roofproject CIP came in at $13,143.21 under budget. I
am writing to request we be allowed to allocate this savings for the needed emergency
back-up lighting system.
Thank you for your consideration.
