Proclamation_Public Health Week April 4-10, 2011 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the week of April 4-10, is National Public Health Week, and the theme is Safety is No Accident: Live Injury-Free; and WHEREAS, each year, nearly 150,000 people die from injuries, and almost 30 million people are injured seriously enough to go to the emergency room; and WHEREAS, unintentional injuries, such as motor vehicle crashes, poisonings and burns, account for 47% of deaths for people aged 15 – 24, and 20% of deaths for those aged 25 – 44 in Dubuque County; and WHEREAS, the financial costs of injuries are staggering, accounting for 12 percent of annual medical care spending and totaling as much as $69 billion per year; and WHEREAS, injuries, unexpected events and violence affect people at home, at work, in their communities, on the move and even at play; and WHEREAS, many injuries can be prevented by taking actions such as wearing a seatbelt, properly installing smoke alarms, correctly installing and using child safety seats, wearing a helmet, storing cleaning supplies in locked cabinets and educating the community about violence and maltreatment towards children, seniors and other vulnerable populations; and WHEREAS, the Dubuque County Community Health Needs Assessment and Health Improvement Plan identified five needs relating to injury prevention including: alcohol impaired drivers of motor and recreational vehicles, prevention of motor vehicle accidents, falls, violence and recreation and sports injuries. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF APRIL 4 - 10, 2011 AS: “PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK” IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
