This recognition is being given to the City of Dubuque Engineering Department (City) and HDR Engineering, Inc. (HDR). BACKGROUND On an annual basis, engineering firms, who are a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), can submit projects and studies for consideration in the annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) competition - -the "Academy Awards of the engineering industry". HDR (Omaha, Nebraska), entered the City's East -West Corridor Connectivity Study (Study) into the ACEC's state competition. This Study analyzed the east - west traffic flow in the City to identify corridor improvements or modifications to support growing traffic demands, while focusing on transit/pedestrian needs and sustainability. DISCUSSION On December 3, 2010, HDR informed the City that the East -West Corridor Connectivity Study received the ACEC Iowa Grand Place Award. Based on this state qualification, it was submitted for consideration in the national competition. The award selection is based on such criteria as the project/study's uniqueness and originality, complexity, as well as technical, economic, and social value. On February 8, 2011, the City of Dubuque received notification from the ACEC national offices that the City /HDR earned a National Recognition Award for the East -West Corridor Connectivity Study. (Note letter attachment.) The City and HDR will be recognized at the national level at the Engineering Excellence Award Gala (at part of the ACEC annual convention), on April 5, 2011 in Washington, DC, while the state recognition will be held in West Moines on Thursday evening, May 5, 2010, at the Iowa ACEC Awards Banquet in West Des Moines.
