Buol 50 West 13th Street Dubuque, Iowa 52001 Dear Mayor Buol: -United *taus t $enate CHARLES E. GRASSLEY WASHINGTON, DC 20510 -1501 March 16, 2011 REPL1 To Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding your support for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. I always appreciate hearing from cities and service agencies in Iowa who benefit from this funding. I recognize that Iowa's cities and agencies take the CDBG funding that they receive and leverage it to the maximum extent to help meet the needs of families in their communities. That is why I have supported this program at the federal level. However, Congress must get serious about reducing federal government spending. Sometimes there will be cuts across the board, which I prefer, and other times there will be specific programmatic spending reductions or eliminations. Congress is being forced to prioritize core federal responsibilities; programs that fall outside this definition are candidates for reductions. Today, Congress is spending $1.68 for every dollar it collects through taxes. America's economy will continue to be hurt by government spending far more than it can afford, and the $14 trillion federal debt will mortgage opportunities for future generations. You cannot sustain a situation like we have today. The American people sent Congress a clear message last November that we have to deal with runaway government spending now. Thank you again for the information and contacting me. I will keep your comments in mind as the appropriations process continues. CEG /sk Sincerely, arles E.
