WHEREAS, June 27 through June 29, 2004 marked the celebration of the Grand
Excursion in Dubuque commemorating America's 1854 Grand
Excursion which marked the first railroad connection to the Mississippi
River and included travel by rail and steamboats; and
WHEREAS, Grand Excursion 2004 was a collaborative effort of more than 50 upper
Mississippi River Communities in four states (Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin,
and Minnesota) and dozens of regional organizations to replicate and
celebrate this momentous event; and
WHEREAS, the months and months of intensive planning and preparation by many
groups paid off handsomely with the great success of this weekend!
The beautiful weather enhanced the great variety of celebratory
activities; and
Grand Excursion 2004 included thousands of people from all over the
Midwest strolling on and near the riverfront and enjoying a variety of
activities: plays, presentations, music, viewing, eating, boarding and
riding the colorful, historic steamboats which announced their a"ivals
with toe-tapping calliope tunes; and

WHEREAS,
WHEREAS, many other events were planned and executed in the various river cities
along the Mississippi and thousands of people took part in joining in
and truly celebrating our heritage along the beautiful Mississippi.
