April 1, 2011, Main Street Iowa held a 25 Anniversary celebration dinner in Des
Moines hosted by Governor Terry Branstad and Iowa Department of Economic
Development Director Debi Durham.
What a night for Executive Director Dan LoBianco and Dubuque Main Street! Imagine
the Academy Awards if over 1/3 were won by one person! How about out of 24 awards
from Main Street Iowa, 9 times Dubuque was either first or first runner up!
The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and the Dubuque Area Chamber of
Commerce received the top Sustainability Award for Dubuque 2.0, inspiring
sustainability through a community dialogue. As you will remember, the City of
Dubuque was recently selected by the Iowa League of Cities for the All -Star Community
Award for Sustainable Dubuque and has received other national and international
recognition for sustainability.
The Multicultural Family Center, 1157 Central Avenue, received the top award for a
Diversity Initiative.
Our own Bill Callahan, Chairperson of Dubuque Initiatives, was recognized by Governor
Branstad as the Dubuque Main Street Volunteer of the Year.
The City of Dubuque Green Alley Pilot Program was first runner up for Energy Saving
Practices.
Cathedral Square Lofts, 205 Bluff Street, owned by B &C Cathedral Development, won
for Upper Floor Rehabilitation
Ken Lin, owner of the building housing the Food Store at 1109 Iowa Street, won for
Facade Improvement - $15,000 and Under.
The Roshek Building, a project of Dubuque Initiatives by Gronen Restoration, with
Architect Jeffrey Morton and Construction Manager Jim Urell, won for total Building
Rehabilitation over 5,000 Square Feet.
The City of Dubuque Downtown Housing Incentive Program won for Business Financial
Incentives.
The Carnegie -Stout Public Library won for Community Initiated Development Project.
Then, to top off the evening, Governor Branstad recognized the level of private
investment in downtowns since the start of the Main Street Program. Dubuque was
recognized for over $500 million in private investment! The next closest community was
$50 million.
