On November 11, 2009 the Veterans Memorial Plaza on Chaplain Schmitt Island
was dedicated. As of today there still isn't a sign at the entrance to Chaplain Schmitt
Island showing its location.
Since March 2010, I have weekly cleaned the 26 benches, globe and base so the
visitors could enjoy this beautiful spectacle. Almost every week I meet someone who is
visiting the memorial for the first time and say how impressed they are but had a hard
time finding it.
My father in law, Robert L. Hedley Sr., a World War II veteran, was crawling up
Omaha Beach at the age of twenty. Bob passed away surrounded by his family on
November 22, 2010 and was a proud passenger on the first Honor Flight out of Dubuque.
Our family would like to erect a sign at the entrance of the memorial so that more
visitors and Dubuquers alike could p ay tribute to our precious veterans. We would
appreciate your support and any information needed so we can move forward with this
much needed project.
Gr,efully,
Gary R. Kircher
