Minutes Human Rights 6 7 04 DUBUQUE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES OF June 7, 2004 Judy Giesen called the meeting of the Dùbuque Human Rights Commission to order at 4:17 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2004, in Conference Room 2 at the City Hall Annex. Roll Call: Present: Absent: Staff: Sarah Davidson Penny Ehlinger Lou Oswald Evelyn Jackson Corrine Murray Bill Ross Judy Giesen Vincent Vanden Huevel Patricia Foster Kelly Larson Bill Blum Carol Spinoso ",) Approval of Minutes en Motion by Commissioner Oswald, seconded by Commissioner Murray, to approve the mintites of May 10,2004 as submitted. Motion carried unanimously. Review Plan of Action for Established Goals 1) Welcoming New Residents -Corine, Patricia Commissioner Murray reported that they are currently working on changing the meeting time. They continue to provide assistance linking people to resources that are currently available in the community. 2) Human Rights in the Schools - Evelyn, Lou Evelyn invited Kathy Stevens to speak to the Commission on a program entitled, "A Teaching Moment," that she is involved with at Central Alternative High School. 3) Sexual Orientation - Bill, Judy, Vince Members of the group have met with five of the seven city council members. Currently they have approximately 550 signatures on petitions, and they continue educating the community through speaking engagements. 4) Disability AwarenesslEducation - Penny, Lou, Sarah Commissioner Ehlinger read, and the commission approved the final draft letter that will be sent to local businesses. They are continuing to seek outside volunteers to help with this project. Case load Report Carol summarized the May Caseload Report. There were forty-six intakes, seven new cases were filed, twelve cases are currently in investigation, six cases in backlog, one case in mediation, two cases are in administrative review, no cases is in AU review, and six cases were closed. The case synopsis involves race discrimination in the area of employment. ChairPerson's Report Judy provided a written report highlighting activities she's been involved in. Director's Report Kelly provided a written report highlighting past and future initiatives. Kelly also informed commissioners that the director of ICRC is planning training for local commissions on July 22 & 23,2004 in Des Moines. Kelly is working on the planning committee for the 40th Anniversary of the U.S. Civil Rights Act Celebration that will be held in Davenport from July 2 - 4, 2004. She asked for volunteers to staff the civil rights tent. Action on GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force Statement Kelly stated that she had received a request from Brad Clark, the Project Coordinator for the GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force, for the Commission to sign a statement of support that affirms the work of the Task Force and supports the need for the enactment of the recommended anti- harassment and non-discriminatory policy. Commissioner Oswald moved to approve the statement, and Commissioner Murray seconded.
