Dear Mayor Duggan and Members of the City Council:
RE: Sidewalks on and Around New Dubuque Middle School
As you are aware, the Dubuque Community School District is constructing a new middle school on a site
located in the west-end of the city. Construction is progressing normally and occupancy is expected in
August of 2005.
A citizen's advisory group was involved in planning the school's location, construction and environment
very early in the building's concept-development phase. One of the earliest safety concerns they raised
was lack of sidewalk access to the new building site.
The District responded to citizen's concerns by planning appropriate school access. We intend to place
sidewalks across our property's entire Radford Road frontage, as well as walkways leading up to the
building. Obviously, these sidewalks will have limited value unless they are connected to a broader city-
wide sidewalk network.
In order to facilitate safe and ready pedestrian access to the new middle school, we ask that the City of
Dubuque require sidewalk installation on the areas shown in red on the attached diagram, or on areas
determined by City staff to be most appropriate. Thank you for considering this request.
Sincerely,
ðrf ff~
