Proclamation_Bike to Work Week May 16-20, 2011 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, in May 1869 the “golden spike” was driven into the final tie at Promontory Summit, Utah, to join the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroads, ceremonially completing the first transcontinental railroad and therefore connecting both coasts of the United States; and WHEREAS, in highly populated regions, Amtrak® trains and infrastructure carry commuters to and from work in congested metropolitan areas providing a reliable rail option, reducing congestion on roads and in the skies; and WHEREAS, for many rural Americans, Amtrak represents the only major intercity transportation link to the rest of the country; and WHEREAS, passenger trains provide a more fuel-efficient transportation system thereby providing cleaner transportation alternatives and energy security. In 2006, intercity passenger rail was 18 percent more energy efficient than airplanes and 25 percent more energy efficient than automobiles on a per-passenger-mile basis; and WHEREAS, Amtrak annually provides intercity passenger rail travel to over 25 million Americans residing in 46 states where an increasing number of people are using trains for travel purposes beyond commuting to and from work; and WHEREAS, the Envision 2010 community visioning process identified the return of passenger rail as one of the communities top 10 priorities, and 55,000 citizens have signed on in support of the return of passenger rail service between Chicago and Dubuque. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE TH CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 7DAY OF MAY, 2011, AS “NATIONAL TRAIN DAY” IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND ENCOURAGE ALL CITIZENS TO ATTEND THE EVENT AT THE HISTORIC TRAIN DEPOT AT THE NATIONAL MISSISSIPPI RIVER MUSEUM TO COMMEMORATE THIS MOMENTOUS DAY IN RAILROAD HISTORY AND IN OUR COMMUNITY.
