By Months for the Years 1912 to Date. Main Street in Union Park Route This route extends from the Ill1noh Central Depot along Main Street to 13th Street, then east to Olay Street, North to Ooular Av., then north to the end of the line; east in ~th Street one block, thence north to Peru Road, turning west on Peru Road, intersecting the line extending north in Ooular Avenue; the last mentioned etreets oon- stituting a loop from the corner of Ooular Ave. and Peru Road. A line extends north and thence west up into Union Park. The oers go out the route above desoribed, returning the same way, except that the oars turn west to Main Street at Hoffman Av. instead of 13th Street. It will be noted in subsequent descriptions of the routes taken by the three other lines that all of them lead thru or are parallel to and within one block of the business district so that the transferring to the Main Street and Union Park lines would not be exceptionally heavy, and, in fact, would perhapa be equally distributed on all the line_, unless one of the lines in particular had some inoentive which would originate business which of neoessity would have to transfer to this partioulár line. The Union Park line, by reason of the presenoe of the park, does originate business on the other lines, whioh is transferred to Union Park, and a study of the figures of inorease on the other lines during the five summer months will indicate this measurably. A scrutiny of the earnings, by months, for the years 1912 to 1920 inclusive, indicates that there is a decided inorease in the revenues in eaoh of these years for the months of May, June, July, August and September. When the effects of the war beoame apparent in thie country and even in the year 1914, the revenues during the five s~~r months above mentioned ware seriously affected and suffered a general decline from the year 1914 thru to the year 1918. The drop which was experienced during the war period has not been fIllly reoovered and the inorsaaes as shown for the year 1919 are largely the result of increases in fares. However, during the year 1919 Union Park was operative and would have shown substantially greater in- creases in revenue upon this particular route had not the unfortunate catastrophe, due to a cloudburst, occurred. -1- Ei¡dlth St. - West Dubuque Line. This line extends from the end of Main Street near the Illinois Oentral Depot, north along Main Street to 13th Street, then west one block, thence north to Locust Street, west on Locust Street to Grand View Blvd. and extending along Grand View Blvd., and returning to 8th Street and terminating at the foot of 8th Street hear the Great Western Depot. This line, more than any other line, approximates a strictly residential line and bearing this in mind a study of the trans- portation revenue derived therefrom by months for the years 1912 to 1920 inclusive, indicates that the five months from May to September inclusive evidence some increase in operating revenue but that the monthly revenue a from the other seven months are heaviest in the months of November, Deoember and January when the hot weather has oeased. It must be considered, in viewing the months of Fsbruary, that generally this has but 28 days and oonaequently the normal monthly revenus would be less than any of the other months. However, it would appear that the increases in the fivs summer months above mentioned are the result of the presence of Union Park rather than due to the increase in riding as the result of hot weather. The fact that the revenues during the months of November, Deoember and Jan- uary are greater than during March, April and October would appear to bear out the conclusion that there is as much, street car riding by reason of cold weather as there ill due to hot weathar and consequently it appears entirely logical to aay that the increase in revenue during the five months in question is largely produced by the operation of Union Park. It will be noted that in the year 1914 and subsequent years a marked increase in revenue for all months was experienced. This is by reason of the completion of the line on Grand View Blvd., producing a loop in the West Dubuque lins which formerly was operated as a line ex- tending from the end of Main Street north and west to the end of Loouat St. Linwood Dodge Line This line extends from Windsor Av. in the northeast corner of the Oity near the Linwood Oemetsry west and aouth, intersecting the Main Street route at 22nd St. and extending south along Ooular Av. to Hoffman Av. thence continuing south along Olay Street to the junction of 2nd St. and Main, then turning north on Main Street to 13th St., thenoe east to Olay Strset and north in Olay Strset to 22nd St. and then out to the end of the line on Windsor Av. It will be noted that this route from 22nd St. practically parallels the Main Street route and consequently it would be expected thet it would be the least revenue producing l1ne of any of ths four, and such is the case. The Osmetery at ths end of the line induces some traffic during the summer and this will account for increase in business during the su~er mcnths, which a study of the transportation revenues will disclose. -2-- Also, some business would originate on the West Dubuque line by reason of the cemetery. Likewise, the Windsor Street extremity of this line would induce busineas for the Union Park Line from the corner of Windsor Av. and 22nd St. snd a study of the actual conditions existing at this particular point, prove this to be a fact. This line also is a line which taps a work- men's residential aection. Originally this line was operated as the Linwood Dodge route, extending southwest from 2nd and Main Sts. up the hill on Dodge St., and while it wee so operated the revenues were much greater than they are at present, and a study of the figures during the years 1912 to the middle of 1918 inclusive, at which time the change was made, indicates a fair- ly uniform traffic during all the months with the exception of the swmner months. Eaglepoint Line - Dod~ Route This line extends from the end of the route in the northeast lim1 ta of the city near Eaglepoint Park (to which a spur line extends) southwest on Rhumberg Av. and 20th St. interaecting Main Street Route at Ooular and 20th St., thenoe following the Main Street route to the corner of Main Street and 2nd, thence southwest up Dodge Street to the end of the line on the top of the bluff; returning it runs east on 2nd St. to Olay and thence on Olay and Ooular to 20th St. and out Rhumberg Av. to the end of the line. This line, at ita northeast end taps a residential section where a large number of workmen have their homes, and also, the southwest end taps a good reaidential section. While Eaglepoint Park at the northeast end of the line has been in existence for a number of years it 18 only within the last couple of years that the Park has been any sort of attraction. The Oi ty recently has put in considerable work in improving this place and making ita very beautifUl park and this has resulted in some increase in bueiness. Like- wise on the line ill a municipal bething beach which has been put into serv- toe within the laet couple of years. From the GlaaB of psople on the north- eaet end of the line it would naturally be expected that this line would be a considerable feedar to the Union Park line and that Union Park itself would attract them and the increase during the months of May, June, July and August would evidence this. A atudy of the transportation revenues indicates this to be the case and it also will be noted, aBide from these months, that the transportation 18 more uniform upon this line than upon any other line. During the year 1918 this line was extended to operate over Dodge Street and the Linwood Line was ehortened correspondingly. The notioe- able increase in revenues during 1918 was produced beoauee of this switch. All Routes Oombined A study of the tranepcrtation revenues from the combined routes indicates a very marked increase during the months of May, June, July, August and September. It will be noted that the war period from 1914 to date evidenced a aharp falling off in business during the summer months and it will . also be noted that the revenue during the other seven months was more or less -3- normal. As is well known, anything from the amusement standpoint was foregone during this period and likewise the majority of young men of Dubuque were in the army. Traffio has not as yet approached normal but during the year 1919 and up to the time of the cloudburst the summer business had increased very perceptibly and had this not occurred, undoubt- edly the traffic to Unicn Park would have been of larger proportion. -4- Main Route Street and Union Park January...................
