Proclamation_Juneteenth Day (June 19, 2011) PROCLAMATION WHEREAS,Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the freeing of slaves in the United States; and WHEREAS, on June 19, 1865, the last slaves in Texas were told that slavery had ended and that they were free nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation; and WHEREAS, today, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and the achievement of African-Americans; and th WHEREAS, on June 19, 2011, the Multicultural Family Center, McGraw-Hill, the City of Dubuque, the NAACP – Dubuque Chapter & the African- American Museum of Iowa will host the 2011 Juneteenth celebration at Comiskey Park from 3-6 p.m.; and WHEREAS, the event will include an opening ceremony, talent show, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, children’s activities, refreshments, a teen workshop on Juneteenth, and displays by African-American-owned businesses; and WHEREAS, this free, family-friendly event is open to the entire community to celebrate freedom in the United States. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 19TH DAY OF JUNE, 2011 AS “JUNETEENTH – A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM” IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
