Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1884-85, 1896 (Assessor), Italianate style cubic plan with belvedere, original square cut porch with ornament, rounded wooden lintels with sills, elongated narrow lower level windows, paired brackets on eaves. Physical Description: narrow clapboard exterior, raised stone foundation and wooden water table, corner boards, left side entry with side lights, transom and recessed paneled side walls, two-story hip roof wing to the northeast, belvedere has hip roof and arcade of three round topped 2/2 lights on each front, bracketed cornice. corbelled chimney in northeast corner. Square front core, 30x34, offset rear wing (16x32) is remnant of four-part array of additions, three of which were erased on 1971 Assessor’s card. Left hand side bay (4x8), three right set porches, twin front bays (both 3x8). Alterations: very well preserved. Additions removed 1972 (Assessor). Landscaping/Setting: ground level rises to the north, house fronts west, stone retaining wall to north. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Hugh Corrance was president of the Dubuque Building and Loan Association (1899) and this house is associated with the work of that important housing promoter. Original Owner/Builder: Hugh M. and Mae Corrance Building History: appears on 1872, 1889 birds eye views. Hugh Conance owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889. Julien’s Journal (6:3:9) states Richard and Mary Phillips purchased this house in 1981, removed a carriage house, added a kitchen wing in 1984, replacing a summer kitchen. The house has 42 windows and as late as 1977 lacked both plumbing and electricity! A Belvedere trim piece is dated “San Francisco, 1875.” Directories run back to 1886, listing Hugh M. and Mae Corrance. He was president of the Dubuque Building and Loan Association as of 1899. In 1896 he was a clerk for William Corrance. In 1890 he thth had a grocery at 13 and Iowa, and in 1886 he had a grocery, flour and feed store at 297 W. 13. Corrance was here through 1911. Ernest and Suzie Seitz here 1911-21. He was the manager of Rosheks Bros. Co. 9.
