As a business leader and member of the Chamber of Commerce, I am responding
to a letter I received September 7 regarding Dubuque Human Rights
Commission's initiative to add "sexual orientation" to the city ordinance. I
would like to stress my strong opposition to the inclusion of adding "sexual
orientation" to the city ordinance protecting ITom discrimination. While I
would not discriminate against a gay or lesbian employee if their work were
sufficient to be employed by my company, I also do not believe that they
need to be singled out or that they deserve additional protection than that
of the average worker. I also believe that this type of recognition sends a
mixed message of acceptability to gay behavior.
I urge city council members to vote NO on this initiative in January 2005
and for future attempts to include sexual orientation into the city code.
