7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1892-1908, Neo Classical
style parapet front combination apartment and commercial block (upper level orioles, stone entrance
surround with canopy and modillions, shingled parapet front, paneled bay fronts, quoin stone surround
on upper windows).
Physical Description: two-story brick rectangular plan (113x51), double storefronts with centered
entrance to apartments, original storefront with decorated beam and thin round columns, stone end
walls on first floor with quoin effect, twin second floor three-sided orioles with paneled bases and frieze.
There are also end wall bays. A double decker porch runs along the back of the plan. Assessor
distinguishes front L-portion, 50 deep east side, 60 on west, southwest corner filled by recessed 53x8
porch, single-story middle portion, 20x25 across plan from east must have been a light well, there is an
east infill wall now, rear portion 53x43.
The building that fronts west as 1292 Main has a two-story parapet front broad rectangular plan, it was
built as a double storefront with upper level apartments. There are three second floor three-sided oriole
windows are set into each corner. The building has a distinctive light yellow face brick, stone corner
quoins, elaborate stone entry and window surrounds, a denticulated belt course at the sill level on
theupper floor, stone foundation and water table, a centered west entrance, and panels of rusticated
th
brick. There is an unusual light well separating 116 West 13 and 1292 and this has been infilled on
the ground level.
Alterations: window replace-ments on orioles, transoms covered on storefronts, storefronts infilled with
vertically fluted metal. Permits note re-roofing in 1968, “erect partition in stone” 1937 ($40).
Landscaping/Setting: parcel ground level rises to the west and the storefronts step up the hill, fronts
north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: George B. Provost owned the parcel when it was sewered. As of 1871 four offices
down, four apartments up.
