7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. StyleNear: 1875-78, 1966, Gothic Revival
style
Designer/Builder: James/John Keenan, architect.
Physical Description: 125x60 rectangular plan with 180-feet high square centered front tower and dome
cap with cross finial. Sidewalls are divided into six bays by buttresses. Paired buttresses frame each
front corner and terminate as finial caps. The two side entrances that now flank the original centered
entry, 1966. The gable roof transepts at the back of the plan were constructed in 1928 and connected
the rectory and church. Inside the sanctuary is supported by three tiers of cast iron columns. The one-
ton cornerstone came from Dublin County, Ireland.
Alterations: front and rear additions as noted. Permits for 120 W. 15th note alterations 1966 ($78,000),
entry cover on side of church for handicapped access 1997. Permits (1524 Iowa) note re-roofing in
1990 ($70,000), church basement remodeling 1977 ($30,000), repair dormer, soffit, casings, siding
church 1991 ($3,238). 2003 Handicap access completely rebuilt.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner parcel (ground level drops to the east and south) that fronts
north on Jackson Park.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; St. Patricks Church
Original Owner/Builder:
Building History: The congregation was formed in 1853 as a mission church of St. Raphael Cathedral,
was an independent parish by 1856 and occupied a small frame church on this site, a building that was
expanded in 1857 with a rear addition (Herald, March 8, 1857). Between 1873 and 1876 plans and
fund raising efforts produced the present edifice, the work starting in 1875 and the building dedicated
on August 15, 1878. The work went slowly. During 1876, $2,000 was expended in building a 60x125
stone basement. The steeple was to stand 175 feet the whole to cost $25,000 (ibid., December 2,
1876; December 14, 1877). Die Iowa lampooned the selection of the "French Gothic" style for the
church, asking if there wasn't an Irish/English Gothic form? "We're afraid that St. Patrick's will be that
sort of Gothic which consists in pointed windows and doors and a mix of everything possible and
impossible (Die Iowa, February 3, 1876). $6,000 was expended in 1878-79 (ibid., January 3, 1879;
Times, December 11, 1878). A 1966 addition cost $780,000 (permit). The parish boundaries started at
9th Street to the south and extended to the north and west. The cornerstone, shipped from Ireland,
reached the railroad depot in early October 1875 and was laid a year and a half later. The bare fabric
of the church was finished by early August 1877 (Die Iowa, October 7, 1875; April 26, August 2, 1877).
The last substantial enlargement dates to 1928 when the plan was extended back to the rectory, adding
two side entrances, and 200 additional seats. The whole was re-roofed. John Keenan was the
architect (The Witness, January 12, 1928).
