Update_Library Board of Trustees 6 28 11Carnegie -Stout Public Library Library Board of Trustees Update From the Meeting of June 28, 2011 Present: Diann Guns, President; Vice President; Paula Connors, David Hammer, Fred Miller, and Kristen Smith Mike Willis Excused: Elizabeth Leeper • With 92 percent of the fiscal year lapsed and 89 percent of the budget expended, it is anticipated that the library will come in under budget with plans in place to cover the shortfall in revenue. • May circulation was up 32 percent over the same time last year, and up 9 percent over FY10 (which itself was up 4 percent). Our busiest day saw checkouts of 5,483 items. • Looking into June, the number of visitors to the library on the first day of the summer reading program sign -up was 2,062. • Reference questions answered showed an increase of 42 percent, and directional questions were up 91 percent. The community is directly benefitting from our new staffing model, information kiosks, and a staff member answering the telephone. • William Carroll has been hired as the Assistant Circulation Supervisor. His last job was with IBM where he worked at troubleshooting and problem solving for customers. His skills, strong customer service orientation and management philosophy make for an excellent fit in the Circulation Department. • Betty Baule has announced her retirement after 23 years as a librarian, effective September 2, 2011. An internal job posting will take place and a search will then be conducted to hire a replacement for the person moving into the Librarian I job. • Steve Brown, Gus Psihoyos and Jane Smith from City Engineering, and Barry Lindahl from City Legal reviewed outstanding renovation related issues with the Board and discussed next steps to get these issues resolved. • A reception was held for outgoing board members Kristen Smith and Elizabeth Leeper. Four board members' terms had expired, however; according to a plan to introduce staggered terms the Mayor will appoint two for a four -year term and two for a one -year term. Such appointments will eliminate four of seven board members' terms expiring in one year.
