AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 32-185(a) OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE
CODE OF ORDINANCES PROHIBITING HEAVY VEHICLES ON CERTAIN
BRIDGES BY ADDING BRUNSKILL ROAD BRIDGE AND LOUISE LANE
BRIDGE
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DUBUQUE, IOWA:
Section 1. That the Code of Ordinances of the City of Dubuque, Iowa, be
amended by deleting Subsection (a) of Section 32-185 as follows:
(a) When signs are erected giving notice thereof, no person shall operate a
vehicle exceeding the posted gross vehicle weight limits on, or over the following bridges:
5 TONS
Fengler Street Bridge
Manson Road Bridge
Section 2. That the Code of Ordinances of the City of Dubuque, Iowa, be
amended by adding to Subsection (a) of Section 32-185 as follows:

Public Works Director Mike Koch is recommending the adoption of a modified
weight limit of 12 tons for the Brunskill Road Bridge and 18 tons for the Louise
Lane Bridge.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

Posted Load Limits - Brunskill Road Bridge and Louise Lane Bridge

INTRODUCTION
Recent inspections of the Brunskill Road Bridge across Catfish Creek, and the Louise
Lane Bridge located immediately west of Peru Road have indicated continuing
deterioration of their structural-carrying capacity.
DISCUSSION
.
The inspections performed by the City's structural engineering consultants recommend
that the Brunskill Road be posted at a maximum 12-ton limitation and the Louise Lane
Bridge at a maximum 18-ton limitation. Currently these bridges are posted at 15-ton
and 25-ton weight limits respectively.
Replacement for these bridges are budgeted in the City's Five-Year Capital
Improvement Program. The reconstruction of the Brunskill Road Bridge is budgeted
for Fiscal Year 2001, in the amount of $315,000. The Louise Lane Bridge was
originally budgeted in Fiscal Year 1998, in the amount of $70,000 and will be bid
along with the Manson Road Bridge Replacement Project, which is currently being
designed.
RECOMMENDATION
I would recommend that the weight limitations be modified on the Brunskill Road
Bridge to 12-ton and Louise Lane Bridge to 18-ton through the adoption of the
enclosed ordinance.
The City Council is requested to adopt the enclosed ordinance establishing the above
load limits on the Brunskill Road and Louise Lane Bridges.
