Re: Walkway Overpass to cross over NW Arterial for Safety of New Middle

I am writing to express my concerns for the safety of the children in our
community as they walk to and from the New Middle School. My main concern is how
they will safely cross the NW Arterial. I understand sidewalks will be added on Radford
Rd, along with some on the north side of Pennsylvania Ave. Still, how are our 11, 12, 13
year old children going to get across the highway safely?
I am asking that a Walkway Overpass be given strong consideration and passed.
I guess, an Adult Safety Patrol could be utilized in place of that but I don't believe that
would take care of the problem. The problem is the speed limit is now up to 50 mph and
most drivers exceed that. By having children and/or adults at the comer of Pennsylvania
and the Arterial, I think we are just asking for someone to get hurt badly or killed.

o They even have problems at age 16+.
There is a cross walk light at that comer, however, I question how it is timed. The high
school students I witnessed crossing couldn't make it all the way across 5+ lanes of
traffic. They seemed unsure and stopped in the median because cars were already starting
to go. It's scary to think that, that could be our 11 or 12 year old kids next year trying to
dodge the cars.
Would you please consider this request for a Walkway Overpass over the NW
Arterial. This will help keep the children of our community safe as they walk to and from
the New Middle School.
