RP:jmh cc: Don Vogt, Public Works Director John Klostermann, Street/Sewer Maintenance Supervisor Masterpiece on the Mississippi TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager Randy Peck, Personnel Manager FROM: Don Vogt, Public Works Director SUBJECT: Request to Reclassify Vacant Maintenanceworker Position DATE: August 16, 2011 Dubuque A-Aica ter 2007 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to request that the vacant Maintenanceworker position in the Public Works Department be reclassified to that of Equipment Operator I. BACKGROUND At the current time, three of the Public Works Department's street maintenance positions have the position title of Maintenanceworker. One of those positions is now vacant due to the sudden passing of one of our workers. DISCUSSION Street and Sewer Maintenance Supervisor John Klostermann and I request that the vacant Maintenanceworker position be reclassified to that of Equipment Operator I. There are three principal reasons for our request. First of all, the Equipment Operator I position description more accurately describes the job duties and responsibilities associated with our vacant position. Secondly, while the Maintenanceworker classification is now an entry-level position in at least two other departments, it is not in the Public Works Department. Our entry level position in the street maintenance activities is Truck Driver. And thirdly, while Maintenanceworkers in at least one other department are not required to have commercial drivers licenses (CDLs), everyone in the Public Works Department's street and sewer maintenance activities must have and maintain a CDL. This requirement is reflected in the position description for Equipment Operator I. It should also be noted that the compensation level for either job title /description is the same — GD06. It is John's and my intent to similarly request the reclassification of the other two Maintenanceworker positions in coming years when they become vacant. ACTION STEP Your approval of the recommended course of action outlined above is requested. Attachment
