Proclamation - Responsible Gaming Education Week Du~~ ~roclamation the gaming entertainment industry is an important part of our community, improving our overall economy and quality of life by creating over 1,000 jobs paying $22,316,980 in payroll and benef"lts in 1999, reducing the number of people on welfare by 12%, increasing tourism, donating over $2 million to local charities and organizations, increased property values, and $25,395,779 million in taxes annually; and the overwhelming majority of casino customers enjoy gaming for its entertainment and recreational value and do so responsibly; however the commercial casino entertainment industry has devoted significant effort and resources to the promotion and practice of responsible gaming, including establishing the National Center for Responsible Gaming to fund research into disordered gambling and youth gambling and funding 1-800-BETS-OFF; and the commercial entertainment industry has designated August 7-11, 2000, Responsible Gaming Week in order to raise awareness of this important issue. NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, BY VIRTUE OF THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF AUGUST 7-11, 2000 AS: " IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN ME IN EXPRESSING GREAT APPRECIATION TO THE DUBUQUE RACING ASSOCIATION, DUBUQUE GREYHOUND PARK AND CASINO, AND THE DIAMOND JO CASINO FOR SERVING AS AN ANCHOR FOR LOCAL TOURISM EFFORTS, MAKING SUBSTANTIAL CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TRI-STATE AREA, AND HELPING TO LESSON THE BURDEN OF CITY GOVERNMENT BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL TAX REVENUE.
