We are opposed to it for several reasons. First, we believe this use is incompatible with preserving the river and adjacent shore habitat. Second, This use is incompatible with the current recreational and park uses of the island. Third, it would diminish the scenic aesthetics of the area. Fourth, and not least important, it would present a serious hazard to boat traffic in the area, especially for pleasure boats. With two (2) marinas and two (2) public boat landings in the area, this part of the river is very congested during the warm months of the year. We do not need a barge fleeting area to aggravate an already serious safety situation. Some years ago there was a proposal to fill in the southeast side of City Island. There was opposition to the destruction of this wet land area. The current proposal would not only result in the situation, but . Mayor Terry Duggan and Dubuque City Council Page 2 May 15, 2000 would also result in all of the additional negatives stated above. David Wl.
