Commissioner Giesen welcomed Jim Jarrard and Gary McAlpine to the Commission. Commissioners
and staff introduced themselves.
Approval of Minutes
Commissioner Ross moved to approve the meeting minutes of December 13, 2004 as submitted.
Commissioner Ehlinger seconded. All in favor.
Review Plan of Action for Established Goals
1) Disability Awareness/Education - Penny, Lou
The subcommittee will regroup this month to look at the committee structure~nd to
recruit new members as several people have resigned.
2) Welcoming New Residents - Patricia
The group will be meeting at noon on January 11 at the Lantern Center.
Commissioner Giesen stated that Corine Murray asked that the Commission remain
involved with the Center's efforts in welcoming new residents.
3) Human Rights in the Schools - Evelyn, Lou
The subcommittee will move forward and begin communicating with contacts they have
identified. Commissioner Ehlinger provided information on training for dealing with
violence and diversity issues that is being promoted through the Lead Center at Clarke.
A suggestion was made to have the subcommittee encourage teachers and
administrators to attend.
4) Sexual Orientation - Bill, Judy, Vince
The subcommittee will present the proposed ordinance amendments to the City
Council at their February 7th meeting. The group is encouraging citizens to write letters
to the City Council. They have obtained over 1,300 signatures on petitions in favor of
adding sexual orientation to the ordinance. Additionally, the subcommittee will
respond to Jim Giese's "My View" that appeared in the January 9th TH.
Caseload Report
Carol summarized the December Caseload Report. There were forty intakes, two cases in backlog,
eight cases in active investigation, five cases in mediation, two cases in administrative review, three
new cases were filed, and no cases were closed. The case synopsis involves a failure to comply with
accessibility requirements in a place of public accommodation.
Chairperson's Report
Judy announced the following activities and encouraged commissioner attendance:
The Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday the 16th at
Washington Park. The breakfast is at Loras at 7:30 a.m. on Monday the 17th.
On February 7'h the proposed sexual orientation ordinance amendments will be presented to
the City Council. That meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium.
The Human Rights Department budget hearing is scheduled for February 15 at 6:30 at the
Library in the Auditorium.
Director's Report
Kelly provided a written report highlighting past and future initiatives.
Additionally, Kelly stated that HUD has cut funding for the Section 8 program. She will be meeting
with David Harris and the City Manager to decide how they will deal with the impact of that budget cut.
Report on Diversitv Conference
Commissioners Jackson and Foster attended the November 15th Diversity Conference in Ames. They
spoke favorably of the speakers and conference content which touched on economic justice, Iowa
demographics, education, and other diversity issues.
Faces & Voices Update
Commissioner Giesen announced that the billboards publicizing the Martin Luther King Jr. events are
in place. Due to time constraints, this item will again be placed on next month's agenda.
New Business
Commissioner Giesen distributed flyers relating to dialog circles that Tara Nelson, an Americorp Vista,
is promoting. Tara asked that commissioners review, consider participation, or forward on to
interested persons.
Adioumment
Commissioner Vanden Huevel moved and Commissioner Jackson seconded to adjourn the meeting.
All in favor. The meeting adjourned at 6:08 p.m.
