Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Setting Fee for Memorial Benches in Various City Areas DATE: September 14, 2011 Dubuque krall 111- Mierica city I'll! 2007 Leisure Services Manager Marie Ware recommends City Council approval to set the cost of sponsorship of a bench at $2,000 for community parks and high service /impact areas such as the Bee Branch and Historic Millwork District, and $1,600 for mini and neighborhood parks and trails. The high profile area benches would sport a bronze plaque. Sponsorship of the Historic Millwork benches had not been previously discussed and Marie Ware recommends that memorials be allowed on those benches as well. I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council approval. Michael C. Ware, Leisue Services Manager Masterpiece on the Mississippi TO: FROM: SUBJECT: DATE: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager Marie L. Ware, Leisure Services Manager Setting fee for Memorial Benches in various city areas August 17, 2011 Dubuque bitil AM- AmericaCitll IV 2007 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to address the fee for memorial benches in parks, along trails and other public spaces throughout the city. BACKGROUND Current Memorial Bench Pricing: • Leisure Services has charged $ 850 for memorial benches in parks and the golf course. • The fundraising material already printed and promoted for Bee Branch has the price set for $ 2000. • Teri Goodman shared that benches at the Port of Dubuque were sold for $1000 and the covered benches for $ 2500. The price has not yet been set for the benches in the connecting plaza. Leisure Services price was set (I'm told) to cover the cost of the bench and the memorial plaque. The price was set for Bee Branch because it was projected to cover the cost of the bench and additional funds for the fund - raising side of the project. The cost to the City for the 6 foot black strap benches including freight is Victor Stanley $ 1268 or Wabash Valley $ 927 The cost of the Historic Millwork benches was $ 1092. The cost of the memorial plaque adds between $ 50 for stainless steel or $ 210 for bronze to each bench. The costs above do not include installation. Some of the benches are installed as a part of a project and thus costs are covered in that way and others are installed by Leisure Services or Public Works staff. RECOMMENDATION OR CONCLUSION My recommendation is the cost of sponsorship of a bench should be $2000 for community parks and high service /impact areas such as Bee Branch and Historic Millwork District and $1600 for mini and neighborhood parks and trails. The high profile area benches would sport a bronze plaque. Sponsorship of the Historic Millwork benches had not been previously discussed and I further recommend that memorials be allowed on those benches as well. ACTION REQUESTED Approval of the recommendation for pricing and adding memorial opportunities on the Historic Millwork District benches. cc: Teri Goodman, Cindy Steinhauser, Jenny Larson
