Dear Mike,
Weare delighted to welcome you to the Mississippi Valley Promise Board of
Directors! You are joining some very dedicated people from varied segments of
the population - church, schoot, business, government, non-profits - all interested
in delivering the Five Promises to our children.
The Board of Directors will be the policy makers charged with creating a vision
and conducting long-range planning to best accomplish the identified priorities in
our community with regard to children, youth, and families. Board meetings will
be held four times during the calendar year.
One of your first agenda items will be to decide your Board meeting schedule.
You are all very busy individuals and we need your active involvement on this
Board. Knowing up front when the Board meets will help you manage your
schedule. Enclosed for your information are the Mississippi Valley Promise's Five
Promises to children, the MVP Organizational Chart and a listing of the MVP
Board members. Also, please find a survey to indicate your preference of week,
day and time for future Board meetings.
The first Board meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, 2005 from
9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Diamond Jo Casino's 2"d floor meeting room. Your Board
meeting packet, with a full agenda, will be sent to you approximately 10 days
prior to the meeting for your review.
On April t3, you will have the opportunity to hear from several speakers as an
orientation session prior to the actual Board meeting:
. Dr. Robert Koob, president of the University of Northern Iowa, who is
also a Cedar Valley Promise board member, will address the role board
members have on a dynamic Community of Promise board. He will
share how the national movement, America's Promise, was initiated.
The Cedar Valley Promise participated in the initial pilot program in
Iowa and Dr. Koob will give an insight into their successful program.
. Dr. Ken Gibson, chairman of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer
Services, will share what Iowa has planned as a "State of Promise".
. Jim Theisen, Dubuque businessman and local promoter ofMVP, will
share his experience with MVP and the concept of America's Promise in
Dubuque.
The Little Red Wagon is the America's Promise symbol- the symbol of
childhood. The wagon fits perfectly with MVP's vision of "pulling together for
our children's future". Thanks for agreeing to help pull the wagon in our
community!
Sincerely,
kLLL-

Fulfilling the ~ Promises
A growing number of communities are mobilizing to build the character and competence of our nation's
youth. The Five Promises, if consistently fulfilled, can significantly increase the chances of youth becoming
successful adults.
The goal of America's Promise is to connect young people, from birth through age 20, with relationships and
opportunities that fulfill the Five Promises. Communities of Promise are facilitating these connections
through natural support systems in neighborhoods and communities - families, youth -serving organizations,
human service agencies, government institutions, faith-based institutions, schools; businesses and youth
themselves.
