WHEREAS, Police Chief John J. Mauss has announced his retirement effective July
7,2000; and
WHEREAS, Chief Mauss started his employment with the City as a young man of 26
in 1966 and achieved various promotions throughout the years, including
master patrolman, detective, sergeant, captain and in late 1984, after a
comprehensive search and review process by the City, a promotion to
the title and responsibility of Police Chief; and
WHEREAS, these last 14 years as the Chief, John has led his department in earning
accreditation status from the Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies; improved minority/police community relations;
initiated and expanded Community Oriented Policing; updated inquiry
methods used by patrol officers including registrations, driver's license
checks etc. on police in-car computers; and increased the number of
authorized staff by 15 sworn positions; and
WHEREAS, John Mauss has by his superb leadership and great dedication created a
Police Department that has a tremendously good reputation, mirroring his
own personal reputation of honesty and integrity; and
WHEREAS, John and his wife Mary Lou, long active in many activities: family, their
faith life especially at St. Anthony's, and travel will now have more time
to expand those and a variety of other interests.
