Dear Ms. Eide:
On behalf of the Mayor and City Council Members, I would like to add our support to your
application for tax credits for the Iowa Inn project in Dubuque, Iowa. The City Council has
identified downtown redevelopment as one of their top priorities and the Iowa Inn is a
significant part of this effort. This structure, which is located in the heart of downtown
and adjacent to our pedestrian plaza, has been the focus of housing redevelopment efforts
for the past several years. Included in this project is the original YMCA building, which is
the only remaining structure of its type in the State of Iowa. Combined with the adjacent
building, these structures present an excollent opportunity to provide much needed
affordable housing in the City of Dubuque.
On May " 2000, the City Council gave preliminary approval to a proposal by MetroPlains
Development for redevelopment of the Iowa Inn site into 31 housing units. MetroPlains'
vast experience and national recognition for affordable housing projects across the Midwest
was key to the selection of MetroPlains by City Council as the developer of the Iowa Inn
site. Included in this approval was language indicating the City's commitment to help
resolve parking needs for this project.
In their proposal to City Council, MetroPlains identified the development of 31 one-and
two-bedroom units. As a result, the City Council has agreed to provide accesS to a total of
31 parking spaces for the development.
