AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE CITY OF DUBUQUE CODE OF
ORDINANCES SECTION 1-8 -GENERAL PENALTY- BY INCREASING
THE FINE FOR A CODE OF ORDINANCE VIOLATION TO A SUM NOT
TO EXCEED FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($500.00).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF DUBUQUE, IOWA:
Section 1. Sec. 1-8 of the City of Dubuque Code of Ordinances
is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 1-8. General Penalty:
.
The doing of any act prohibited or declared to be
unlawful, an offense or a misdemeanor by this Code or any
ordinance or code herein adopted by reference, or the
omission or failure to perform any act or duty required
by this Code or any ordinance or code herein adopted by
reference is, unless another penalty is specified,
punishable by a fine in a sum not to exceed five hundred
dollars ($500.00) or imprisonment not to exceed thirty
(30) days.
Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect upon publication.

RE: Proposed Ordinance Increasing
Fines for Code Violations
Dear Mayor and Councilmembers:
Enclosed is a proposed Ordinance to increase the penalty for
City Ordinance violations from $200 to $500.
The 2000 Legislative Session increased the maximum penalty for
civil misdemeanors to $500. Although in most cases, the City would
not be asking for the maximum penalty, it does provide us with the
latitude to more adequately punish repeat offenders or more serious
offenses under the City Code.
I recommend that the City Council adopt the attached Ordinance
increasing the maximum fine to $500.
