Veteran's Freedom Center_Request for AssistanceOctober 3, 2011 VETERAN'S FREEDOM CENTER 1897 Washington Street, Dubuque, IA 52001 (563) 845-0034 Veterans Helping Veterans! Dubuque City Council % Dubuque City Clerk 50 W 13th Street Dubuque, IA 52001 Dear Dubuque City Council, RECEIVED 11OCT -3 AM II: 27 City Cier k's Office Dubuque, IA Our Dubuque Veterans Freedom Center located at 1897 Washington Street has been in operation since December of 2010. The mission of our Freedom Center is to meet the needs of all Honorably Discharged Tri -State military veterans past and present. We offer a place for veterans to interact with fellow veterans, network together and provide the camaraderie that all have shared while proudly serving our country. At the Freedom Center close interpersonal relationships are created with our veterans. For those in need financially, physically or mentally, we offer the resource information and pass it along to the veteran. The center itself, offers scroll saw woodworking and arts and craft opportunities. Leisure activities such as pool, darts, cards, television, music and computers are also accessible to our Tri State veterans. There are no costs associated from our center to the veteran. We are a completely non - profit organization operating under the umbrella of The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6 of Dubuque. All of our funding is obtained strictly through local monetary and material donations. We receive no federal or state funding. The primary reason for this letter is to summon your assistance. The Veterans Freedom Center serves approximately 30 -45 veterans every day and is quickly running out of activity space to be able to serve and accommodate our veterans. Our current leases expires at the end of December 2011, and have been informed that the new lease agreement being offered to us, will more than double our current building rental cost. We feel very strongly about the mission we are fulfilling for Tri -State veterans as the need is current and will continue to grow. Although we are very limited in the budget we have to work within, we offer a huge community resource and service to the Dubuque veteran community. Any assistance that you can offer in helping us to secure a new location for the Veterans Freedom Center within Dubuque would be greatly appreciated. We are open to entertaining all ideas. If you have any questions, or need more information please contact our Veterans Freedom Center Manager — Mr. Jim Wagner at 563- 845 -0034. ank you in a ' vance for your kind consideration.
