Dear Senator Harkin,
I am writing to ask you to support the House Transportation Committee's
recommendations for the Federal Transportation Bill. Included in this bill is a $25
million in earmark funding for the Julien Dubuque Bridge and $19 million for the
Southwest Arterial (IA 32).
As you know, IA 32 is the number one transportation priority for the city of
Dubuque, the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (DMA TS),
Dubuque County, the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater
Dubuque Development Corporation. The Southwest Arterial is critical for
continued economic development since it connects the new Dubuque
Technology Park on U.S. 61/151 with the new Dubuque Industrial Center West,
and the existing Dubuque Industrial Center near U.S. 20. This connection was
critical in the recruitment of a 300,000 square foot facility for McGraw Hill
Publishing Company to the Dubuque Industrial Center West. IA 32 will also meet
the future needs of companies such as John Deere, Nordstrom Distribution
Center, A.Y. McDonald, Swiss Valley Farms, H&W Transport, Flexsteel, and
Dubuque Stamping and Manufacturing who continue to ask for a connection
between U.S. 20 and U.S. 61/151.
This bill also provides much needed funding for expansion of the Julien Dubuque
Bridge are also greatly appreciated. This link is important for an east-west
connection between Dubuque and other communities such as Galena, III.;
Rockford, III.; Chicago, III; Waterloo, Iowa and the 1-35 interchange. The $25
million earmark included in the federal transportation bill will provide significant
funding for this critical transportation project.
