Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
September 29, 2011
Present: Paula Connors, President; Mike Willis, Vice President; Frederick
Miller, Secretary; Trustees, John Anderson-Bricker; Diann Guns; David Hammer
and Jenny Harris
The budget for FY13 is being planned for and prepared now. CIPs are
due October 4, the Operating Budget is due October 20, and IPs are due
October 27.
The library continues to be busy with a 15 percent increase in the number
of visitors and a 13 percent increase in the number of circulations over the
same time last year.
We have begun tracking the number of check outs for downloadable
media, which numbered 1,740 titles in July and August, and is
experiencing a rapid growth in demand.
The Lending Library vending machine was installed at the Hy-Vee Asbury
Plaza location. So far the most popular materials are children’s books
and DVDs.
A part-time intern in IT was approved funded by salary savings realized in
a recent reorganization. A request was made to reallocate funds from
savings related to a retirement and allocate the funds to increase the part-
time aide position at Recommendations to full-time. This request was
declined. It will need to be presented as an IP in the coming budget year.
No update on outstanding construction issues from City Engineering, City
Legal, or the contractor.
The Board affirmed their desire to not change the design of the exterior
signs, just the color. The Historic Preservation Commission recommends
the signs be changed to remove the columns, change the color, and sit on
stone or concrete.
The Board agreed to hire Himmel & Wilson to conduct a community
survey. The purpose of the study will be to determine level of satisfaction
with the library as well as interest in west side service beyond what has
been provided.
