Brookings Institution Thank You CorrespondenceBROOKINGS 1775 Massachusetts Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20036 telephone 202.797.6000 fax 202.797.6004 web brookings.edu Metropolitan Policy Program The Honorable Mayor Roy Buol 2640 Becker Court Dubuque, IA 52001 -1607 November 10, 2011 Dear Mayor Buol: On behalf of the Hitachi Corporation of Japan, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Brookings Institution, I want to offer you our belated but sincere appreciation for being a part of the closing discussion of our Eco- Engineering: Building Sustainable Cities forum on October 6th. Your remarks on Dubuque's sustainability plan were truly insightful, inspiring, and really added a practical perspective to the day's discussions. If you have not done so already, please check out the video clips from the event (http: / /www.tvworldwide.com /events /ecoforum/111006/) and please feel free to share the link with your friends and networks. Additionally, I have enclosed a copy of a book that I recently helped to compile, Resilience and Opportunity: Lessons from the U.S. Gulf Coast after Katrina and Rita, which provides insight into the response to those natural disasters. The main goal of this publication is to demonstrate to leaders around the world — whether they have a deep interest in the future of the Gulf Coast or are vulnerable to natural and other crises in their own communities— that it is possible to fight effectively for opportunity and put in place systemic reforms in the wake of tragedy. I hope you enjoy the book. Again, we really appreciate you finding time in your busy schedule to be a part of the event and I look forward to working with you again in the future. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know. Sincerely, Amy Liu Senior Fellow and Co- Director, Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program Enclosure: Book
