I have reviewed the request submitted by Leisure Services Manager Marie Ware and I
support her recommendation. The position of Assistant Horticulturist and
Maintenanceworker are compensated at the same rate of pay. The requested action is
for the City Council to approve a motion eliminating one Maintenanceworker position
and creating one additional Assistant Horticulturist position in the Leisure Services
Department. This process is required by Civil Service.

The purpose of this memo is to request approval to create one additional Assistant
Horticulturalist position and eliminate one Maintenance Worker position in the Leisure
Services Department
BACKGROUND
The position assigned to mainly to care for Highway 20 landscaping maintenance has
been a park maintenance worker since the position was established.
DISCUSSION
Care and maintenance of the Highway 20 landscape requires skills specific to
perennials, natives, trees, shrubs and roses. The variety of plant material and their care
will be better served by the skills of an Assistant Horticulturalist. An open Maintenance
Worker position allows this opportunity at this time.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend the creation of one Assistant Horticulturalist and the elimination of one
Maintenance Worker.
