City of Dubuque
City Hall - 50 W. 13th St.

SUBJECT: Demolition related to Downtown School
Dear Mayor and City Council Members:
The Historic Preservation Commission applauds the efforts of City staff to provide
options to demolition of historic structures related to development of the downtown
school; specifically, the offered use of municipal surface parking near the downtown
school site.
The area surrounding the downtown school site includes adequate on-street parking
and off-street surface parking to meet the needs of the school. That area also
contains a number of historic structures that provide space for affordable housing and
small businesses. Once demolished, these resources cannot be replaced.
Bya vote of 5 to 0, the Historic Preservation Commission respectfully requests that
the City Council request that the School Board refrain from the demolition of buildings
and use available surface parking in the area of the downtown school site.
Sincerely,
/~~.~
David Stuart, Chairperson
Historic Preservation Commission
