Proclamation_Strong Healthy Students WeekTHE CITY OF DubE Masterpiece on the Mississippi PRO CLAMAT ON WHEREAS, approximately 300,000 adult deaths in the United States and Iowa are attributable to unhealthy dietary habits or physical inactivity; and WHEREAS, nearly two - thirds of American adults are overweight or obese and over 18% of adolescents aged 12 -19 are obese. Obesity in Iowa and the United States has become a national security issue, with fewer than one in five young people qualified to serve in the Armed Forces; and WHEREAS the United States Army encourages all of America and Iowa's youth to remain fit through smart and healthy choices. Healthy eating and exercise are individual choices constrained by opportunity and resources; and WHEREAS, health and fitness are key to the success of future generations of Iowans. Young Iowans need the tools and models to make the right decisions regarding their health; and WHEREAS, as part of being a "giving guest" in Iowa high schools and colleges, the United States Army has undertaken an initiative to bring together resources and partners for health and fitness events and expos in high schools in Dubuque; and WHEREAS, these outreach events support the focus and goals of the "Iowa Healthiest State 2016 Initiative," spearheaded by the Office of the Governor and Iowa Department of Health. NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCI, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 27, 2012 THROUGH MARCH 2, 2012 AS STRONG HEALTHY STUDENTS WEEK AND ENCOURAGE SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, INDIVIDUALS, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, THE PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNITY, AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TO WORK TOGETHER TO PROMOTE AWARENESS, HEALTHY CHOICES AND LIFESTYLES IN AN EFFORT TO COMBAT OBESITY AND PROMOTE FITNESS, NUTRITION, RESILIENCY AND HEALTH AMONG THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF IOWA.
