Legislative Letters June 7, 2005 The Honorable Jim Nussle Congressman, 1st District of Iowa Room 303 Cannon House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515-1502 Ref: $44 Million for Dubuque Transportation Priorities Dear Representative Nussle: Thank you for identifying the IA 32 (Southwest Arterial) and the US 20 Julien Dubuque Bridge as projects to be included in the new transportation reauthorization bill, the Transportation EQuitv Act: a LeQacv for Users. These two projects have the support of the entire community, and have been identified as number one priorities by the City, the County Board of Supervisors, DMATS, the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Dubuque Development Corporation. The bill is being moved to conference committee, and I understand that you are a member of the committee. We look forward to working with you and our entire delegation in the final approval of the new transportation bill, and future appropriations for these projects. We have discussed this project and asked for your support over the past years. Thank you for your willingness to work with us on the financing of the project. Your staff (Sherry Kuntz) has been very helpful in guiding us through the process. We continue to move this project forward. The Environmental Assessment process has been completed. The City, in cooperation with lOOT has contracted for the preliminary design of the highway. The new transportation reauthorization bill (TEA-LU), recently passed authorizes $19,000,000 for this project. The transportation reauthorization legislation is now on its way to conference committee. We urge you to continue to support this project in the final version of the bill, and continue to provide funding annually through the appropriations process. The City of Dubuque appreciates your work in securing $1,900,000 for preliminary design of the highway. We are under contract for this work, and the Environmental Assessment process has been completed. I am impressed by your willingness to work with us on the financing of the project, and had many positive discussions with Richard Bender and Miche'lIe Evermore over the past years.
