For the Citizens of Dubuque County Nancy Everman Dubuque County Extension Education Director Master Gardeners - is active and growing in Dubuque County with over 100 members. Volunteers take the ISU Extension Master Gardener 40 hour training and then serve an internship completing 40 hours of volunteer service. Master Gardeners are available to answer questions at the Dubuque County Extension Office. Last summer Master Gardeners provided over 550 hours of volunteer time at the Farmers Market. In addition, they had over 859,000 media hits through newspapers, radio, and TV spots last year. The Master Gardener class is taught by ISU Extension specialists and local Master Gardeners. Interested people should call or stop by the Extension Office for more information. Classes start in January. AmeriCorps Coordinator Partners in Learning AmeriCorps - "As a principal in a school located within neighborhoods with high rates of poverty, unemployment, underemployment and single parent households, I can attest to what AmeriCorps Members have been able to accomplish. Last summer, members organized and supervised activities for morning and evening programs. Activities encouraged youth to learn more about neighborhood/city opportunities, as well as a chance to explore academic endeavors. Parents and neighborhood residents were impressed with the "safety of the neighborhood." Over 3100 students were tutored or mentored last year, 1921 youth and their families experienced cultural activities including music, drama, and art. Teachers are reporting 83% increase in reading skills and 88% increase in math skills by participating youth. Last summer, 319 youth participated in Summer Reading Academics and 191 new students attended Kindergarten J umpstart Program. Marilyn Ehrlich. Dubuque County Extension Brings Iowa State University to You Iowa State University Extension serves Iowans through six program areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Business and Industry; Communities; Families; 4-H Youth Development; and Continuing Education. Dubuque County Extension brings the university to you. Preparing Homebuyers for Homeownership. Fifty-seven participants completed the six hour homeownership training sponsored by Iowa State University Extension in Dubuque County. This successful program has been sponsored since 1997 in cooperation with seven local mortgage lenders, Dubuque Housing Services, and the Dubuque Board of Realtors with ISU Extension. "The Exploring the State of Poverty Welfare Simulation," is a tremendous learning experience that allows participants to walk a mile in the shoes of the poor. They experience the utter frustration and daily hopelessness that accompanies living in poverty. "As a Community Action Agency, we are proud to take the leadership role in partnership with Dubuque County Extension to bring this experience to the community," said Tom Stovall, Executive Director, Operation New View Community Action Agency. During the last five years over 692 people have experienced the simulation in Dubuque County. Dairy Day Seminars were attended by 49 dairy producers, improving management skills. The Four State Dairy Conference was attended by over 300 dairy business representatives, improving consulting skills. These events were sponsored by Iowa State University Extension Dubuque County. 4-H Community Club Programs are reaching over 500 youth in 20 clubs in Dubuque County though Clover Kids and Community Clubs. More than 100 volunteer leaders work with youth year round helping youth build life skills and learning how to be responsible productive citizens. Community service activities are encouraged. This year the 4-H Ambassadors sponsored "Happy Feet." The Ambassadors applied for grants and fundraised to buy gym shoes for children whose families could not afford them. Extension does much of its work in partnership with others.
