Partners in Learning AmeriCorps - "As a principal in a school located within
neighborhoods with high rates of poverty, unemployment, underemployment and
single parent households, I can attest to what AmeriCorps Members have been
able to accomplish. Last summer, members organized and supervised activities
for morning and evening programs. Activities encouraged youth to learn more
about neighborhood/city opportunities, as well as a chance to explore academic
endeavors. Parents and neighborhood residents were impressed with the "safety
of the neighborhood." Over 3100 students were tutored or mentored last year, 1921
youth and their families experienced cultural activities including music, drama, and art.
Teachers are reporting 83% increase in reading skills and 88% increase in math skills

Development; and Continuing Education. Dubuque County Extension brings the
university to you.
Preparing Homebuyers for Homeownership. Fifty-seven participants
completed the six hour homeownership training sponsored by Iowa State
University Extension in Dubuque County. This successful program has been
sponsored since 1997 in cooperation with seven local mortgage lenders,
Dubuque Housing Services, and the Dubuque Board of Realtors with ISU
Extension.
"The Exploring the State of Poverty Welfare Simulation," is a tremendous
learning experience that allows participants to walk a mile in the shoes of the
poor. They experience the utter frustration and daily hopelessness that
accompanies living in poverty. "As a Community Action Agency, we are proud
to take the leadership role in partnership with Dubuque County Extension to
bring this experience to the community," said Tom Stovall, Executive Director,
Operation New View Community Action Agency. During the last five years
over 692 people have experienced the simulation in Dubuque County.
Dairy Day Seminars were attended by 49 dairy producers, improving
management skills. The Four State Dairy Conference was attended by over
300 dairy business representatives, improving consulting skills. These events
were sponsored by Iowa State University Extension Dubuque County.
4-H Community Club Programs are reaching over 500 youth in 20 clubs in
Dubuque County though Clover Kids and Community Clubs. More than 100
volunteer leaders work with youth year round helping youth build life skills and
learning how to be responsible productive citizens. Community service
activities are encouraged. This year the 4-H Ambassadors sponsored "Happy
Feet." The Ambassadors applied for grants and fundraised to buy gym shoes
for children whose families could not afford them.
